Application of significantly enhanced driving forces — both chemical and physical — to drive chemical and transport processes. This would include the use of rotation to enhance buoyancy driven processes and the use of non-traditional energy sources to drive heat, mass, and momentum transport (e.g., ultrasonic mixing, microwave heating, etc.).
Apr 01, 2021 Microwave technology can also counter biodiesel's current economic restraints by lowering energy demands, accelerating reaction times, and increasing yields. Feb 02, 2019 A microwave fixed-bed reactor (MWFB) was used and its performance was compared to a conventional thermal fixed-bed reactor (CTFB). Over 80 % ethane conversion was achieved under microwave irradiation mode at 375 C. Here, to achieve the same ethane conversion conventionally, the reaction temperature had to be elevated to 660 C in the CTFB.
For every increase of 10 C, the reaction time is cut in half. For example, a reaction that may take a full day at room temperature would take approximately 2 minutes at 120 C. Many microwave reactors, including CEM’s Discover line, have the capability to heat to 300 C and have a maximum pressure threshold of 435 psi.
For over a year, the Institute of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology (Warsaw, Poland) has been implementing the project financed by the Polish government entitled “Research and analysis of selected chemical aspects of the production and use of TRISO fuel in the HTGR nuclear reactor”. An important
Gyrotrons are powerful microwave generator and essential component in fusion reactor research facilities. Their purpose is to provide a focused microwave beam typically in the range of 140–170 GHz and a power output of 1–2 MW. Electron cyclotron resonance heating is the main concept for plasma heating in toroidal fusion reactors based on ...

Jan 29, 2008 Many chemical reactions may be accelerated by order(s) of magnitude when exposed to microwaves. Reaction selectivities are often enhanced. Reasons for microwave reaction enhancements are speculative, often conflicting. We have demonstrated that microwaves can change the energies and/or the “effective temperature” of individual species …
Jun 04, 1998 Numerical simulations were performed to predict the performance of microwave plasma reactors with various reactor geometries. The simulations include the calculation of the electric field distribution using the finite integration theory and the determination of the plasma density distribution based on a breakdown field algorithm. One reactor geometry with a cavity …
Jun 11, 2010 Chemical processes assisted by microwave heating are attractive energy-saving processes. We applied microwave heating to the polycondensation of lactic acid, which conventionally is known as a high-energy-consuming process. We herein studied the microwave-assisted reaction at scales ranging from several tens of milliliters to several tens of liters.

May 31, 2020 One of the main reasons why microwave chemical reactors are popular is their heating speed. Figure 14 shows the kinetics of distilled water heating in an experimental reactor, MSS3, which was designed and constructed at the Laboratory of Nanostructures, Institute of High Pressure Physics, Polish Academy of Sciences (IHPP PAS).
Microwave energy is a form of electromagnetic energy. Its frequency can impact the realm of molecular rotations. The electric field of a microwave heats matter through a phenomenon known as dielectric heating. As the electric field passes through a sample, energy is transferred to molecules through the mechanisms of dipole rotation and ionic ...
Microwave reactors are equipped with pressure sealing technology, which means heating conditions above reflux are often used in microwaves. The speed at which it can reduce reaction times can be found by applying the Arrhenius law/equation: For every increase of 10 C, the reaction time is cut in half. For example, a reaction that may take a ...
Nov 08, 2013 The original design of the microreactor (left) and the top view of the microwave unit (right) that houses the chemical reactor. Image by Wen-Hsuan Lee and Klavs F. Jensen and taken from their poster submission. When they ran an analysis of the reactor’s heating profile, Lee and Jensen discovered some issues with the original design.
Oct 21, 2019 The computational study shows that during the scale-up, the volumetric power absorbed passes through a maximum, whereas the energy efficiency and heating uniformity exhibit strongly nonlinear behavior. As a result, this work introduces a method for quantitative microwave models and insights into the scale-up of commercial microwave reactors.
